Fear, panic or anger may be normal human reactions, but they are also bad advisers. How should you approach it best? The following step-by-step plan will help you further.

Safety
Unfortunately, a car accident can happen to anyone. Regardless of whether you are at fault or not, the most important thing is to keep calm. In that way you can avoid frustration.
1

Immediately switch on the hazard lights and put on a fluorescent jacket. Today, having a fluorescent jacket within reach in the car is required by law. The position of the warning triangle. To be visible to other road users in good time, it must be at least 30 metres from the car on a town road or 100 metres on a regional road. Always keep your emotions and nerves under control.

2

Check the damage. If anyone is injured, call the emergency number 112 as quickly as possible, state the exact location of the accident and briefly and clearly describe the gravity of the injuries. If you have any knowledge of First Aid, then help the injured. If that is not the case, try to reassure the injured and keep talking to them.

3

Exchange personal details with all the parties involved and with any witnesses of the accident. Everyone must complete a European Accident Statement (EAS) for the insurance company. Remain calm and record all the requested information.. If you disagree with what the other party claims, do not enter into a discussion. Record your own version on the collision form and also draw a sketch of the situation yourself.  In the 'comments' section clearly state your version and that you disagree with the version of the other party.

Tip!

Enter all your details on your form in advance. This saves you a lot of time and stress at the time.

4

The police do not have to come and draw up a damage assessment unless there are injuries. Therefore it is important for you to remain calm and act as accurately as possible. A fully completed collision form will also allow the insurance company to start a claim file faster than if they have to wait for the police report (PV) number. Certainly if you are not at fault, you have every interest in completing the European Accident Statement as completely as possible. Also take photos at the site with your smartphone or camera. That is an excellent tool to document the claim accurately and completely.  If the police intervene, ask for the PV number.

5

If the car is damaged too badly to continue driving, then it will have to be towed. If you are a member of a roadside assistance service  (e.g. VAB, Touring ), then you can contact them for this. The insurance company's green card also usually has an emergency number. Call that number first. They will contact the breakdown service. Do not contact a breakdown service yourself, because then you run the risk that the insurance company will not cover those costs.

6

The fully completed European Accident Statement should be submitted to the insurance company if the car has fully comprehensive insurance and/or if there is a counter party at fault. If that is not the case, you will have to pay for the repairs yourself. If applicable, also inform the leasing company and fleet manager.
