Eight tips to increase the range of your electric car in winter months

Do you have an electric car? Then you may already have noticed that you do not get as far in winter months with a fully charged battery. Why? The lithium-ion battery in your car does not cope well with the cold. Its capacity can be reduced by up to 30%.

Winter 1 - battery 0

Say that your electric car has a range of 500 kilometres. In cold weather, you might only be able to do 350 kilometres. Some models handle the cold better than others. Here are eight tips for keeping the range of your car as high as possible, even in winter.

1. Park in a sheltered spot

Try, as far as possible, to park your electric car inside or under a carport. This will prevent your charging cable from freezing during charging. No sheltered car space to be found? Then keep your plug connection dry. Is the connection or your cable frozen anyway? Defrost them with a hot water bottle. Never with a bucket of hot water or a hair dryer.

2. Use winter tyres

Perhaps it is stating the obvious, but always put winter tyres on your electric car. When the temperature is below 7 degrees, they have more grip on the road. For your electric car this means less energy loss, and therefore improved range.

3. Preheat your car

The biggest energy guzzler in the winter? Heating the inside of the car. Some electric cars allow you to preheat the car while it is still charging. Using the app for your car, you can heat it when you get up. This way, you leave with a full battery and a warm car and you use less energy to keep your car warm during the drive.

4. Turn on your seat heater

Do you have electric seat heating? If so, set it to maximum and set your car heater to a low setting (this way you avoid fogging up the windows). The seat heater uses up to 25% less power than the car heater.

5. Switch off the electronics as much as possible

The less electronics your car uses, the longer your battery will last. Leave your car radio alone and charge your smartphone at home or at work.

6. Bring a charging cable

Make sure you always have a charging cable in your car in the winter. If your battery runs out faster than you thought, you can quickly find a charging point and charge your car.

7. Use your cruise control

Use your cruise control as much as you can. With a constant speed, you use less energy.

8. Release your accelerator pedal slowly

Your electric car recovers energy when you release the accelerator. By slowly releasing the accelerator instead of braking to slow down, you increase the range of your car.
